The College is privileged to be participating in The Community Mosaic Couch Project in collaboration with the One Tree Hill Progress Association. The project was established to bring together locals in bush-fire affected communities in the Northern Adelaide Hills to make mosaic ‘patches’ that join to form the ‘quilts’ that adorn a trail of outdoor community couches.
During Construction Trade Skills lessons, our Year 12 students have been learning bricklaying and cement rendering to undertake this project ahead of the onsite work in the Adelaide Hills. Students have been practising their skills at the College by creating two single seater couches and working out any issues and requirements as they progress.
In early Term 2, students will travel to the One Tree Hill site to commence work on a three-seater couch, laying the foundation for the association’s volunteers to commence their mosaic covering. The couch will depict local flora and fauna, features of the original Inn, and the historically significant bullock team pulling a dray.
This project is providing a wonderful opportunity for students to engage and collaborate with local community at the same time developing connections and trade skills.
As part of the Sampson Flat Bushfire Recovery program, communities developed the couch project for locals affected by the 2015 fires to come together, share stories and physically build something that would acknowledge their townships.
