Unveiling A Community Masterpiece

2024 Community Couch_Hero
The One Tree Hill community mosaic couch has been unveiled at an official opening event held during the school holidays.

Our Year 12 students were involved in the project from the outset, advancing their skills in brick laying and cement rendering while forming community connections. Construction of the couch in the Adelaide Hills was undertaken over several weeks with the final stages of covering it top to bottom in beautiful mosaics.

Design and Tech Leader of Learning, Vin Hatcher, said it was a great idea to involve the students in a community project and to further develop their trade skills.

“We’re teaching the kids to not only be workers, but leaders in their community and to get involved in more local projects like this one.”

Students collaborated with the One Tree Hill Progress Association and the talented Mosaic Girls to construct, produce, and bring to light an embellished community masterpiece. The colourful design depicts local flora and fauna, historic images of the town and the famous bullock team pulling a dray.

Known to hills residents as the ‘mosaic couch project’, it was established to bring together locals in bush-fire affected communities in the Northern Adelaide Hills to make mosaic patches that join to form the ‘quilt’ that adorn a trail of outdoor community couches.

The One Tree Hill project was successful in obtaining a Community Development and Event Grant from the City of Playford to support the construction of the bench.
