Taking on the role of industry professionals, our Year 11 Automotive 2 class participated in a mock industry meeting for discussions and to present on agenda items of their chosen issue.

Chaired by teacher Mr Jack Prebble, students took on various roles within industry, including an auto mechanic owner and manager, 1st year and 4th year apprentices, HR manager, diagnostic technician, the head of skills and training, as well as a supply manager.

During the meeting, students outlined their issue and its scope and impact on the industry. They then delivered a reasoned proposition and listened to and responded to questions and feedback from their peers.

The issues chosen by students included: upskilling of electric automotive technicians to prepare for the electric vehicle market; apprenticeship pay levels; gender equality in the industry; cybersecurity of electric vehicles; skills shortages; autonomous and electric vehicles and their ecological impacts; and the rising cost of sourcing raw manufacturing materials.

“The mock industry meeting forms part of a unit in English on persuasive speaking in professional environments,” Mr Jack Prebble said.

“Students have learned how to research issues within the Automotive industry, using relevant texts to educate others and assertively advocate evidenced solutions. They have also learned about agendas, minutes, action items and other key aspects of formal meetings and prepared agendas of their own.”

As the next generation of industry leaders, each student did a fantastic job demonstrating their knowledge of industry and professional communication skills.
